On February 25th we headed down with our Homeschool group to Black Sheep Creamery in Chehalis, WA
It was lambing season, so we were fortunate enough to see a bunch of baby lambs, most under 3 weeks of age. The children were even allowed to take turns feeding the babies...cutest thing ever!
When we first arrived we were able to take a peek in and watch as the farmers milked the sheep...looks just like milking a cow. We learned that during the lambing season and summer season the sheep get milked for 10 minutes 3 times a day. Then twice a day the head man is making cheese. Black Sheep Creamery makes several different types of Sheep Milk Cheese, and it is GOOD! We were all lucky enough to be allowed to try some after we were done. It would have gone perfectly with a good glass of wine. ;)The family that owned Black Sheep Creamery actually started with sheep's milk because their son was having really bad reactions to cows milk and even nursing. They tried a friends goats milk but liked the taste of sheeps milk better. Well a few years later they turned it into a business and are currently as busy as they can be selling at farmers markets, small local food chains, and even some bigger stores.
After we watched the milking and learned all about the cheese making process it was time to finally go into the barn and see all the babies, the best part for the kiddos. Inside we got to see all the dairy sheep and lambs. I do have to say they are only cute as lambs!!! Sheep really just are NOT the cutest creature to be walking, but they are nice. At one point we even were able to pet a wool sheep. He was SO soft I could have used him as a pillow.
It was a great fun time at the farm that day and defiantly worth the drive down, especially because we just headed straight to Mom and Dad's house afterwards and spent the weekend with the Huffman family....and Rocky. :) The first night Blake had a "great" idea. He wished he had a projector to point at the ceiling so that he would have a huge screen to play video games on. Well...Uncle Rocky sure came through on that one. The next day he brought over his projector and they set it all up on the vaulted ceiling in the front room. All 4 boys were hooked and had a great day in their playing video games on the ceiling. I do have to say it was REALLY cool though. :)
It was such a great weekend for everyone I think!!!! Always lots of fun with the family.
